It’s been awhile since I looked at the goals I had set for myself way back at the beginning of last year. All year long I saw forward progress on so many fronts, even started new unexpected projects. But when I reread what I had written, I was very pleased to see that I had surpassed my “business aspirations”, and did far better than I aspired to! Only means that 2009, the goals and aspirations will be even higher! I’m ready!

In 2008, my original online business with Top Line Creations ended – partly from their dissolution of my Consultantship when they dropped their MLM business model, and changed their name to Breezy Design. Then through my own final decision in September when I had finally had enough, and resigned all together.

I gave Mom’s Online Retreat a facelift, yet the momentum wasn’t there to keep it up to date. I renewed the domain, and can’t let it go because it is my baby, my very first built from scratch all by myself website. (decision will be made this year )

Last year brought big exposure for MomChats.com as our free chatrooms for Moms got some publicity in Family Circle magazine! Direct Sales reps and WAHM business owners have popularized the online party approach to sales and our schedule continues to reflect that popularity! We also introduced our own monthly shopping events – and plans are in the works for some great events in 2009!

Val and I also saw a need for an online venue to help WAHMs spread the word about their business opportunities – thus we created WAHMchats.com. While it’s been slow to take off, we have ideas for online classes and recruiting events (WAHMbiz Fairs) to assist in online team and business building.

My WAHM Space saw lots of growth and some changes. We added some new features (and a looking to add more). As the economy took it’s tumble we eased our members economies some by changing over to free memberships, with all the features of a paid membership.

One of my most recent developments happened at the end of 2008 and continues today. I hooked up with Lisa Robbin Young, and have been benefiting from her business coaching, especially her new “Build Better Customers” program. I’m using the techniques I’m learning from Lisa to develop the business model I want for my greeting cards business. (Coming soon!)

Oh, and 2008 marked the first year I had a somewhat steady income to show for all of my online efforts. I see that only becoming more steady as this year unfolds. Things have changed over the last year, but I believe for the best. Here’s to a productive and profitable new year!

I actually wrote this 3 years ago, it’s long, but it still rings true today…

I taught my four year old son how to draw a turkey, by tracing his hand. You remember how to do this, don’t you? Make the thumb into the turkey’s head, (don’t forget the little “hanging thingy”) and turn the fingers into tail feathers. Granted, I had to remind him that turkeys only have two legs. Tommy decided he would decorate our staircase with turkeys-one per step. We went together, and counted the stairs. “I need to make 14 turkeys!” he said “That’s a-yot!”

We went to the calendar and counted how many days there were until Thanksgiving. Seven-perfect! I decided to teach Tommy a lesson in goal setting. I explained to him that we could break it down, and he could do two turkeys every day until he had all 14 done. He made the first two, colored the feathers blue, cut them out, and immediately taped each to the spindles of the first two steps. The next day, he announced that he was going to make three turkeys that day, to get them done faster.

Tommy sat down to draw his three turkeys, but got frustrated rather quickly when the turkey wasn’t turning out the way he wanted it to. We worked together to trace his hand, and I had to draw the “hangy thingy” on each. He colored them, and cut one out, but when he cut the head off of the second one he threw everything on the table, and wanted to quit! I gave him some encouragement, and he cut out the third turkey. We put those two on the stairs, and I reassured him that he met the “daily goal” we had set. That was day two of seven.

On day three, I asked him about making his turkey decorations, and he said “I’ll do them later.” He was busy playing with his Batmans and never gave it another thought. Nor did he think about making turkeys on days four and five.

Now granted, I could have just let it go, and not brought up the Turkey goal again. But, I’m a Mom. I thought it would be so cute to have Tommy’s turkeys decorating our staircase. He was so enthusiastic about it when he came up with the idea. So, on day six (the day before Thanksgiving) I brought the subject up again. I reminded him that the next day was Thanksgiving, and asked how many turkeys he had made. He went to the stairs and counted the four turkeys, then asked how many more he had to make. When I told him he had 10 more to make, he rolled his eyes and said, “That’s going to take me forever!” And so, we have four turkeys on our stairs. Tommy didn’t reach his goal; however, he did rationalize it with “Well, I’m four, and I made four turkeys! ”

My reason for sharing this story is, as I was going through this process with my son, I thought about how any of us may be when it comes to setting goals. Was Tommy’s goal realistic? Are yours? If he has worked towards his goal a little bit each day, he would have achieved his goal-one that he thought was “a-yot!” when he thought about the total sum. If you set a realistic goal-are you working a little bit towards it each day? Tommy got frustrated at his first set back, and needed my encouragement to keep going. How do you handle setbacks, or the obstacles in your way of obtaining a goal? Do you have a support base, a way to get encouragement when you need it? When he didn’t work on his goal for a couple of days, he was completely overwhelmed with the amount of work he would need to do-10 turkeys in two days instead of five. He quit, and found a way to be okay with the progress he did make. I was just glad he didn’t have a meltdown about it.

What happens when you don’t reach your goals? You have to decide how you are going to react. Instead of quitting-find a way to be satisfied with what you have accomplished. You’re hopefully further along than you were; however, don’t stop there. Follow-up on your results. Go back, look at the realism of your goal, if you did everything you intended to do. Revise your goal, make adjustments as needed-but never, ever give up!

I’m keeping the turkeys, and this story for Tommy’s scrapbook. They are the first turkeys he’s ever drawn! I’ll have the memory of teaching him how to do it, and the look on his face when he saw how the first one came together. Boy, did I feel smart! I’m keeping this memory, and revising my goals! What a rewarding experience!

“Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.”

Going through some cards today at Send Out Cards, and this sentiment struck me as a good way of looking at the end of the year. Time flies, and we inevitably find ourselves saying “Where did the year go?”. When I look back at what I had set out to do with my biz in 2007 – and then look at what I accomplished this past year – the quote above sums it up.

I’m not going to cry because I didn’t get the Retreat Directory up at Mom’s Online Retreat. I have built up a list and can still keep that as a future plan for the site. There will be no tears shed over the marketing and web page building I did for TLC’s LifeTimez scrapbooking software, all to have that particular product discontinued. Such is the life of direct sales company products – and besides I’ve been able to turn those web pages into marketing pages for LifeTimez Online. Same content, just another venue. No regrets over the domain names I’ve purchased, but not done anything like I thought I would with them.

Instead I can smile because what was to be my online note card store has turned into a full fledged online greeting card business, and I’m able to use my SOC biz to grow my SOC biz – as well as keep in touch with my scrapbooking customers, team members – not to mention send some unexpected cards to family and friends, in turn hopefully making them smile. I’ll be proud that I’ve advanced to Advisor with TLC, and look forward to making it to Director – and qualifying for a Carribean Cruise! I’ll be thankful for the blessings that have been bestowed (such a formal sounding word) on me – through unexpected partnerships (though I now know there was a reason we 3 were brought together). First Val asking me to hook up with her on MomChats, and then the whirlwind conception of My WAHM Space and the brainstorming between me, Anita and Val – but, that story is for another post.

No crying, just smiling as I visualize my Reflections of 2008 post here this time next year!
